Spanish by level

Spanish books at A1 level

A1 is the level at which you can read a sentence, not yet a paragraph. Present tense, one clause at a time, and words you can half guess. This page shows what that looks like in real Spanish, gives you twenty lessons of it to read for nothing, and only then says which book carries the same Spanish on paper.

What A1 means, in numbers

The Spanish itself

If the sample below reads slowly but reads, you are at A1 and you are in the right place. If it reads without effort, start at A2 instead.

What A1 Spanish actually reads like

The opening of Lesson 1, The gentleman of La Mancha, exactly as it stands on the page. Nothing here has been simplified for the example.

The 20 free lessons at A1

All of them are on this site, in full, with no account and no sign-up. Each one is a chapter of Don Quixote rewritten at A1, with its vocabulary, its grammar and its exercises. There are 4 review units among them as well, one every five lessons.

The books at A1

Everything above is free and stays free. The books exist for the two things a web page cannot do: being read away from a screen, and being read in order without twenty other links on the same page.

The course at A1, in two volumes

The same 20 lessons that are free above, printed with room to write the answers in. The whole course in one file is 11.99 € in EPUB and PDF.
